Disney really, REALLY needs to fuck off with these live-action remakes. They are a waste of money, talent and creativity — all for the sake of a quick, nostalgia cash grab. I wish Disney would bank on more original and unique content (i.e. Encanto, Milo Murphy’s Law) rather than remakes, sequels, and spin-offs — regardless of their popularity (i.e. Marvel, Star Wars).
Sadly, one of these original shows (and one of best animated series I’ve seen), The Owl House, has been axed by Disney with a shortened 3rd and final season (three 45 min long specials rather than the usual duration of its previous instalments). Why? Because it didn’t fit into the Disney “brand”.
According to TOH creator Dana Terrace, via Reddit (Oct 05, 2021): “At the end of the day, there are a few business people who oversee what fits into the Disney brand and one day one of those guys decided TOH didn’t fit that “brand”. The story is serialized (BARELY compared to any average anime lmao), our audience skews older, and that just didn’t fit this one guy’s tastes. That’s it! Ain’t that wild? Really grinds my guts, boils my brain, kicks my shins, all the things. It sucks but it is what it is.”
The branding excuse also makes zero sense to me given there is some some questionable shit like The Kardashians and Family Guy on Disney+.
While I admit I enjoy some spin-off shows (i.e. The Mandalorian), the constant churning out of repetitive concepts leaves so many original ideas and stories outnumbered and untouched.
